Radiator only gets luke warm

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 2.45 PM

Hi, I have just moved into a house and have two radiators that are only getting luke warm. The bottoms of the radiator stay cold (one warms about 90% of the way down and the other about 60% down). They weren’t heating up at all but after multiple hours of bleeding they have improved. They were also taking ages compared to the others to get warm, I shut off all the other radiators and they warmed up instantly so I know that is a balancing issue I need to sort. Any help as to why they will only get warm and not hot? Thanks!

May need to bleed the radiator, if no the thermostatic valve may be stuck. Last case, sludge in the rad and rad needs replacing.

You've hit the nail on the head, its a balancing issue. I would recommend leaving the two problem radiators fully open and gradually open the others until they heat up also. This would give a basic balancing effect and should continue to work effectively. If this doesn't solve the issue, you will need to call on a Plumber/Heating Engineer to come and carry out the balancing for you.

if there's sludge in radiators the best thing to do is take them off,and flush them out with cold water, and at the same time, check both the valves. Before all that I would turn off the working rads to force heat to the cold ones then balance the whole system properly.

Take off both radiators check both flow and return valves are operating properly if so flush radiators but really you would be better hiring a professional .

I think you have bled them enough going by your comments, try removing the valve heads/trv's and gently pull the pin up and down with a pair of pliers at the same time as spraying with lubricant. It may loosen off and pop up if stuck at all. Otherwise worse case scenario rust and sludge up inside those rads you need a full power flush to clean and refresh the whole system. You could change the rads but that would still leave gunk in the rest of the installation.
