Moving outside switch wire to side wall

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 3.26 PM

Hello - I just removed a door and replaced it with a window - the outside switch wire is now dangling from the ceiling. How do I move it to the side wall? Do I attach the wire to the brick wall and route it along or do I put the plasterboard on the brick wall first and then cut a hole in the plasterboard for the wire?

Hello, If your switch wire is exposed at the moment, now is the best time to get that wire into the position where you want it... before the wall is plasterboarded. Just take note, that all power cables must be run in permitted zones only, so that they adhere to Wiring Regulations. These zones include running the cable vertically or horizontally direct to any accessory. So in your case, run the cable directly from above, into your new switch position. Hope this helps

I would suggest contacting your local electrician who should be able to visit your property & advise you accordingly

My advice is always the same. The only people who should ask these sorts of basic questions are first year apprentices because they need the next three years of training and experience to carry out this sort of work unsupervised. It is best to ask a professional to do this for you as there’s a lot more to it than just concealing a cable in a wall. It doesn’t sound like a costly job.
