Plumbing Question

Do i need to keep 2 soil/stench pipes?

I have a 1907 terraced house which has 2 external cast iron soil/stench pipes running down the back of my house. I have one first floor bathroom and the toilet connects to 1st pipe. The 2nd pipe runs straight into the ground with no joint connections to be seen. I want to redesign my bathroom and need to move the toilet outlet from the 1st pipe to the 2nd pipe, to allow me to resite the toilet and bath and install a shower/bath. When lifting the manhole cover I cannot tell which pipe runs to the drain, but there is only one entry into the manhole. No one else in my run of 4 houses has 2 soil/stench pipes, why do I?

This sounds like a vent pipe for your soil stack and the the other 4 houses. Building regulations won't let you connect any waste pipe to the vent stack in case of blockage. This will result in dangerous gas build up in the sewage system and poor flow from the waste pipes.
