Do I need an expansion valve on water heater?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.59 PM

Hello and thank you for reading my question. I have a Redring MS6 water heater in my workshop. It has been fine for two and half years, then one day when the heater was on, the plastic connection pipe popped off and flooded the workshop. We mended it by replacing the connector (Superseal pipe insert) and it was fine for two months, then the same joint popped again. Do we actually need an expansion valve fitted to stop this from happening again? Thank you for any advice.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

A safety relief valve is always a good idea on a pressurised installation but I don't think Pipework / fittings should be popping apart as you describe always refer to the manufacturers installation instructions as for any appliance

Hi. Normally there must be a safety valve, if not it is absolutely necessary to fit one to prevent the pressure that is created inside the cylinder from blowing the pipes as in your case.

After checking the fitting instructions they should be fitted with a pressure relief valve and if the mains pressure is over 3bar a pressure reduction valve to bring the cold feed pressure to 3bar or below.

Probably need a new redring heater because if its blow once obviously theirs a fault in the heater. They're cheap enough to by new and not fix. If your original plumber didn't put a combined pressure relief valve on the incoming water main I'd ask him to do so but you dont say what kW the heater is and I dont have time to Google it. By law water heaters are required to have pressure reducing valves, line strainer ete etc if over a certain kw
