Restoration & Refurbishment Question

Cleaning terracotta floor tiles

I'm renovating a 1950's house and have uncovered terracotta tiles in the hallway. I have decided to keep them and not carpet over but they're in need of a good clean.
Can anybody suggest a good way to get the tiles clean - do I need any specialist equipment? Are there any particular cleaning products that I should avoid using?
Thank you!
