Tiling

Grout disintegrated less than a year

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.38 PM

Hello. We had a cracked shower tray replaced this time last year, they took out and replaced just first row of tiles along one of the two tiled walls in the shower. We noticed a yellow stain on kitchen ceiling and looked around shower and saw that the grout just on the bits replaced has disintegrated and left a few holes. Its in a loft and under warranty but they want £150 call out fee which is refunded IF they deem it to be an error on their part. I don't think it should have disintegrated in this way so soon, especially as the rest of it which is now 2 yrs old is fine. Only want to pay call out fee if I can be confident it was their error! Thanks

Hello, Sounds like their error but hard to prove ultimately from this side of a keyboard. If you had a warranty on the work they should not be charging a call out fee and also if they are a respectful company they should have no problems having a look for you,I know I would. Hope you get it sorted, don't use them again.

It sounds like maybe when they fixed the new course, Grouting commence too soon before the Adhesive had time to cure properly? Or was the shower used again too soon? But Agree with Gerald...

If the grout has failed it could be the fault of the tile adhesive being flexible but the grout not . If the tiles are tight on the (plastic?) tray, the movements of the tray will continue to damage grout. Also all wall bottoms that meet shower tray should have been siliconed. If they weren’t then they didn’t know what they were doing and are definitely at fault as grouting around a shower tray is in no way going to waterproof it. Sounds like their fault to me.

When the tray was fitted it should of been sealed around with clear mastic to make it water tight then tiled and white mastic finish if holes appeared the grout is not right but it should not of come through two lots of mastic it is down to the person who fitted the tray Has for a call out charge they are having a laugh they should come out for free
