What is the purpose of this?

Hi all, I've bought a new house and currently redecorating and I've notice that the master bedroom has this "weird" box by the window, don't know what to call it but it's the only room that's it's built that way. I'm looking to install a curtain track on the windows but don't want to risk breaking something. Could someone be kind enough to explain what is the purpose of this? I've attached a picture circled for better understanding.
