Toolage charges?
Hello everyone,
My builder is charging me £200 for 'wear and tear on his tools' The job was 11 days long and involved taking down a wall between 2 rooms and putting an RSJ in, bricking up 2 doorways, making a new dorway and opening up 2 fireplaces. He has told me that he is in fact reducing the charge from £400. In addition to the tollage charge, he is charging me £80 for drill bits related to the stonework. Making a total of £280 ('reduced' from £480). Also, £180 in diesel- I presume this must be for travel as there was no generator!
Is this all standard practice and reasonable as intimated to me?
Thanks!!
Added: Thanks for the feedback everyone. Roc Builders- I completely understand a builder needs his tools and am happy to pay a fair price to reflect this. The thing I have issue with mainly is that I feel he is taking the mickey telling me that it is usual to charge this and at a rate of £400 for an 11 day job that I have described...I just received a total price and no break down despite asking more than once. I have real difficulty as this person is supposed to be a good friend- I know I know, never mix business and pleasure!!
I do feel that he is trying to list items to add up to the original price that doesn't reflect the job done and which took 2 weeks instead of 3 as quoted and this is with an additional £600 added to open up a fireplace which I requested after the job was started (which equates to about 5 days labour on the bill after materials!) :(
My house is a mess and I will need to pay someone else now to finish it :( Would it seem usual to add a toolage hike of this amount for a job of this nature, please be honest as I have no idea. Can you tell me if it is usual to add diesel/petrol to a bill as well? THANKS AGAIN

Only reasonable if it was included in his estimate. Put it this way, we would never charge wear and tear on tools. Its a con if you ask me, do you pay for a taxi then an extra fee for his tyres or a service? Nope.
Pay for a haircut then pay to have the scissors sharpened? Nope

Tell him to take a hike, all these costs should have been incorporated in his price. He is not a builder he is a crook and is simply trying to rip you off. When i hear stories like this it makes my blood boil, send the clown to see me,i will put him straight.
Surely you cannot be that green, every tradesman who has responded has spelt it out for you quite clearly.THIS GUY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND HE IS TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF.

I know of some builders that charge "wear and tear" on certain bits so its not unheard of.Most others take this into consideration when pricing the work and lose it in the quote but dont list it as wear and tear because some people get upset by it.At the end of the day if we had to pay for all of our stuff out of our day rate,we would earn a pittance:) The problem here is that your builder has presented you with an unexpected charge and you have every right to question it.If it werent included in your original quote and he has done no extra work, tell him to jog on.IN RESPONSE TO YOUR ADDED INFO,IT IS NOT NORMAL TO ADD ON ALL THESE BITS AT THE END.HIS ORIGINAL QUOTE SHOULD BE SET IN STONE UNLESS YOU HAVE ASKED FOR EXTRA WORK (AND A PRICE FOR THIS SHOULD BE AGREED BEFORE ITS STARTED).Asking for extra money for anything (tools/diesel included) at the end is a joke and very unprofessional.Dont pay the extra and good luck with your new builder.Make sure EVERYTHING is included in your new quote.

Alarm bells should be ringing this is the typical signs of a dodgy builder! All my quotes are written and include all wear and tear and fuel costs as this is part of the job and not an extra! Report him to trading standards and if need be start small claims court proceedings. You should have a good case as his hidden "toolage" charges would ammount to an unfair term of contract! - something that by your own admission was not disclosed beforehand.

This joker has underpriced the job in the first place and now hes trying to recoup losses by any means ,i would also double check his work ,in tends to come in 3s with these jokers ,if he was the lowest quote this is why ,these jokers go in low to steal/tempt the customer away from honest reputable builders but more often than not the job ends sour ,THERE IS NO BARGAINS IN BUILDING BEWARE OF CHEAP IMITATIONS

This just gets better by the day LOL
As all the others have said that factor should have been added into the cost of the job from the beginning.
Wish I could get £80-00 per job for my drill bits, We could be millionaires by this time next years Rodders!!
The one factor that everyone is missing is that if he had a decent accountant the cost of consumables is offset against what you pay in tax anyway, so he is in fact getting double bubble for the wear and tear.
This will without doubt make you a millionaire by this time next year, Luvly Jubbly, LOL !!!

Tell him to sling his hook, it's out to con you,and sounds like a dodgy builder to me,hire someone else, who won't charge you wear and tear etc, wonder how much he wants for wear to his work boots, the man charges for his tools, when in fact he is the tool, the mind boggles!!!!!!!!

i don't know exactly the consumable tools he has used, but reading that he cut a doorway out i would say he used a diamond blade for his sthil saw. i pay £30 max for my diamond blades, they last a long time too. cutting a doorway out would barely touch his blade. blades are one item i charge for, but not directly unless i have had to buy a new one on the job. i would just add on say £5.00 per job to take wear and tear into consideration.
i would charge for drill bits used. not if i already had them in my tool box, but if i had to go and buy a certain drill bit i would give the customer the receipt and add cost onto bill.
the use of the actual tools is a difficult one because like me i recently spent £650 on a sthil saw which if i had not bought, the customer would have to pay an hire fee for if i had to hire one instead. i am thinking i should charge a small fee for the use of such an expensive tool which ultimately will one day wear out.
for your builder to charge you a £200 fee for tools then i would ask him to show you what he used. for such a small sounding job he sounds like he is playing you for some extra money.
if he say he had to buy a new diamond blade, ask him to show you the receipt. he might of bought one of the expensive blades which can cost over £100, but trust me, no diamond blade would wear out on a single doorway cutout, especially a £100 plus one.
