Electrical Question

Whats wrong with my bathroom lights?

I've got spots in the ceiling and sometimes they don't come on when I pull the cord. Sometimes I have to pull the cord lots of times, sometimes I pull it once and the lights come on after a few minutes

Caroline, this could be either of a few different problems, although its most probably a faulty pull cord switch as these regularly play up and need replacing.

Cause i) Faulty contacts inside the switch, oftem will feel stiff to pull the cord - solution to slove problem is fit new pull cord switch (approx £2 - £3 to buy)

Cause ii) If the spotlights are low voltage types (i.e. MR16 lamps) then it could be a faulty transformer or transformers as often its one transformer per light. -solution is fit new transformer (around £6 each)

Cause iii) If the spotlights are low voltage types and have had new bulbs fitted recently, the combined wattage of the bulbs could be greater than the maximum rating of the transformers, and so they are overheating and working intermittently. - solution is to remove the MR16 lamps and if they are 50watt or 35watt, replace them with 20watt lamps.

Hope this helps, please click on "like" if it does.
