Painting & Decorating

Should our painters have removed old lining and sanded out huge bumps

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hi, We bought a flat last year and honestly we’ve been incredibly unlucky with tradesmen (not to say we haven’t had a few good ones). We’ve recently had painters in who charged about 700 for a hallway and a room in brilliant white unfortunately when they painted it The lighting wasn’t great but at the time we still said we weren’t happy. Our issues are that there are huge bumps in the wall that they didn’t sand, they missed a few areas, the doors are cracking and they painted over old lining paper that had bubbles in. When we complained they said it wasn’t their job to sand the walls. Are we being too picky or for this price should we have gotten a better result?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

yes if the linning paper was in and bad state it should have been stripped and all walls should have been made good again....and as for not there job to sand walls thats a joke becausr 80% of our job is preperation. And even if the linning was in reazonably good shape it wouldnt of hurt just strip it anyway..unless they were worried about state of walls under ghe linning..trying to pull a fast one i think.

Hi well this is something that should of been underlined at the start of the job. When painting over existing paper it will bubble up but should sit back down once dry say a day or so depending on how old it is. Now if the wall it's self has bumps or Uneven it would need to be stripped back either sanded and filled or plastered there right to say its not there job to sand the walls but could of just explained you cant sand down paper only with a light grade sand paper with is just for buffing up walls hope this helps and by the sounds of the price they didn't quote for a detailed job and should have specifically said what that price included sounda like what we call a tosh out if it needed stripping either they should of said before starting or you as client should of said this is what we want done

If the customer didn’t want to pay for a full strip then you can slit and stick the paper but this depends on how bad the paper is bubbling. Always best to do a full strip, prep (fill, sand, seal etc.) and paint. If the doors are cracking on the door itself then wood filler should have been used and allowed to cure before painting. If the cracking is between the wall and architrave then you need to caulk and allow to it to cure before painting or it will crack again.

£700 to paint a hallway and a room is a cheap price. You get what you pay for. a trades man should be charging around £20.00per hour £160.00 a day. To do the job right I would estimate a hallway (no stairs or landing) and a small room. To prep and paint to a good standard 1week so the labour alone should be around £800.00 then you have materials lining paper, adhesive, fillers, sandpaper, emulsion for the ceilings and walls, undercoat and top coat for your Woodwork. Any where between £150(cheap wicked paint) or £250 (good quality)so you should have been paying around £1200.00 give the trades person some profit. For that kind of money your trades person sould have identified the large bumps (probably bad plastering) and talked to you about them. Sorry if its not the answer you where looking for
