Conversions - General Question

How should floor joists be extended?

We are in the process of converting a bedroom to a bathroom. We have already removed the chimney from the roof and in the bedroom itself which has exposed two floor joists resting on the inner wall of the chimney. Before we can remove the chimney in the room below we need to extend these two joists to rest on the supportingg wall, so here's the question: should the joists be removed and replaced with joists of the correct length or can the affected joists be 'braced', and if so how? Thanks

Thanks Substructure. Was hoping that would be possible.
