Do I need a Minor Works Certificate for extending a circuit with two new sockets?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Having had an electrician extend a ring in my living room and add two new double sockets across the other side of the room, do I now need a minor works certificate for that work? When I enquires with original tradesman, he said he needs to check if there’s an RCD on my fuse board and if not “to replace the MCB with RCBO and test the installed sockets" I don’t understand the jargon, so just want to check if this sounds correct. Edit to add: Does £150 for the RCD to be fitted, and £70 for the electrical certificate, sound reasonable?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, all electrical work requires a certificate, apart from an accessory change or light fitting change. My edit... £70 for a certificate is absolutely a rip off. Why is he actually charging for a certificate?? The other bit, who knows, I can do a certificate on my iPad while I’m there on the job and email it to the customer. I just pay for the app on my phone annually. Did he/is he going to get another person in to issue the certificate? If he is you should have been informed beforehand. I’m amazed tbh

Yes you do need a minor works certificate for the modified circuit. Jargon: RCD stands for residual current device, this detects tiny faults between neutral and earth as trips in milliseconds giving extra protection. MCB stands for miniature circuit breaker, these protect against overload and live faults. You need some form of RCD protection, If your board does not contain an RCD then an RCBO would need to be fitted. Depending on the make of the fuse board, these range from about £16 to over £30. As for charging what you mentioned, it is an absolute rip off. Suggest you lose the previous electricians number, never use him again and post the job on my builder. That way you'll get someone decent, and can leave feedback on the quality of their work.

A minor works certificate, would need to be issued as the circuit has been modified, or changed from its original state. All Socket outlets require RCD protection. If a circuit didn’t have the RCD, then in order for it to be compliant, it would require one to be fitted, once modified.

Hi, I can confirm that additions to an existing ring main should be certified by a minor works certificate, your contractor is also right in stating that the circuit should be protected by 30ma RCD and if your consumer unit doesn’t contain any RCD protection this can be achieved by an RCBO. Hope this helps.
