Hi - what's needed to make a fireplace into an alcove? It's a standard chimney which is open to the elements at the top. The existing cast iron fireplace has been removed and the fire bricks will need to be removed. The house is c.20 years old. For reference, it's going to house nothing more than a pot.
Depends on what your using it for some people are taking the fires out and putting in log burners if this is the case and they require boarding out I would recommend a hard cement board or fire line board even if not using it for fire still better on doing this in case of change of use age if making fire place larger a concrete lintel should be use above the opening to carry the weight of the brick work , the all plastered in correctly

Hi you need to board the sides prob with fireboard incase you want to fit a stove at a later date , the top board to block the chimney would need a vent in it to stop a build up of condensation in the chimney void and the chimney cowl should be changed for one suitable for a unused chimney

Sutton ColdfieldWhat I would recommend is that you render the inside of the fire place an bead around it with a silver tile bead if its only to house a pot or you may like to put a fake cast fire with the logs iv done many of them an thy do look very smart
