Gas Work Question

Back boiler...

Hi,
i am buying a new house which has an old gas fire with a back boiler.
Thing is, we wanted to have the fire removed as the wall it sits on is the only wall our sofa will fit against.

I know understand that this cannot be removed and covered as back boiler needs air but can we rem
ove and cover with a grate style thing and sit sofa an inch or two away from the grate?

Or if worst comes to worst have the sofa against the fire?

What can we do to free up that wall?

Thanks
