Seeking advice on whether to skim coat the wall

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.24 PM

We have just purchased a house built in late the 1950s. The house has wood chip wallpapers and we want to remove them and repaint it with emulsion paint. After remove the wall paper, which is quite easy, we found that the underpart is the plaster wall with yellow cover. I think the yellow layer is the old pain and the wall is mainly covered by the yellow paint with some flakes coming down. When I remove the flakes with knife, the wall exposes. I am wondering, after removal of the wallpaper, whether I can paint it directly (after applying primer) or I need to skim coat the wall first. If I need to skim coat, what kind of material should I use as I am confused after searching relevant information? Thanks very much for your professional advice!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Plastering over Woodchip can be done providing the paper is firmly bonded to the underlying wall. if it is not then the paper with heavy layer of plaster will sag I hope this helps

I wouldn’t recommend plastering over any wallpaper might be hard work but do the job once and do it right
