Lead roof leaking over a small bay put in by window installer

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.23 PM

We have a very bad leaking bay and have had the window installer back twice. It’s leaking again!!! When they leaded the bay they used a continuous piece of lead(only a small bay ) They then cut three individual squares out of the spare lead . They nailed through the lead into the bay roof and then placed/sealed these squares over the nail heads . QUESTION Is this right ?????? I’ve asked if this could be causing the leak with the rain seeping under and down the nail hole & they said no. Thank you . Irene

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It not great to be nailing through lead st all I would imagine that could be a key factor of how water is getting into the house. But with out looking or seeing the job hard to tell

If it is one piece of lead and it is fitted correctly it will be the nail holes no one should pierce lead

If these little lead squares are nailed on top it will leak if they are nailed on a verticle pannel then it is no different than fixing lead roses. I would be surprised if they used code 5 lead for this work

Hi Irene, it doesn’t sound correct from your description most leaks on leaded bay windows are down to the wall flashing. Straps are normally used to hold down the lead, they are nailed underneath the waterproof layer and folded over the lead to hold it in place. Should never nail or screw through any material designed to protect a property against the elements. A window fitter fits Windows, this is a job for a lead worker or a roofer. Hope this helps

Nailing the lead down like they did is the cause off the leak you have no need to nail the lead down like that plus depending on the size off the bay you should do it in two peace’s

They should have chased the lead into the wall and held it in place with lead wedges not nails then mastic the joint with water proof sealant or point up with sand and cement

Undoubtedly this is the cause of the leak. NEVER nail down lead on a flat surface.

If they have nailed threw the lead then I would say there couldn’t possibly be a weak spot for water to travel down so yes I would say so

Hallo Irene, sounds like you’ve had the cowboys in. You should never nail through lead if it’s covering another roof material. If you send me some pictures I will try to help you out. Regards Dean
