Low ceiling on staircase

We are looking to move and recently viewed a (1930s) house which we like, but which had a very low ceiling clearance on the staircase (I think the landing was above and the problem area was a few steps down); I am about 6ft 2 and had to duck a bit!

Approximately how much work would be required to increase this clearance ? Presumably, it is easier to lower the stair height rather than change the solid wall above?

Without looking it's hard to gauge the best way forward, if you go down the staircase alteration route the new staircase will have to be built within regulation so you may not be able to lower it.
you may be able to alter the trimmed joist above to gain more head height though. I hope this helps a little.
