Notched joists. Is there a need to repair?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
Hi there, I've had a new kitchen fitted on the other side of the room to where the old one was. The fitter has notched the joists for the waste pipe and hot/cold water pipes. It all works fine however I'm concerned the joists have been cut into too much. What are the regulations (ideally in Edinburgh/Scotland) and what can be done if they are cut too much? Many thanks.

There are quite a few measurements to take into consideration in regards to holes and notches including how far from the ends of the joists or other holes notches etc, if you search joist notch regulations you will find the reccommended distances, for you're own peace of mind however if you wanted to strengthen the joist you can "sister" on another length of timber next to the original joist and bolt together, plenty of videos on youtube, hope this helps
