Carpet Tiles on wooden floorboards
Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.19 PM
Hi there,
What are the best underlays for carpet tiles? Some floorboards are uneven by about 2mm. Would you use Diall 5mm Foam Underlay (interlocking ones) to level the floor and then carpet tiles on top? Currently there's AirTred underlay and carpet grabber still left from the old carpet we stripped out.
Thanks in advance,
Simon Cardiff

If the subfloor is uneven you will need to fit 6 or 9mm flooring grade plywood and just forget all about the underlay you mentioned. The carpet tiles must be fitted directly onto a sound, level surface, preferably with a none permanent tackifier adhesive. This will stop any peaking of the joints and avoid any potential trip hazards.

Hi guys.
Carpets aren't really my area of expertise however...... I have used diall products before and found them to be unsatisfactory. They make the cheaper line of building materials and the quality just isn't there. I wouldn't use it if your floors are not perfectly level
I hope that helps
i used to do carpets many years ago, so my advice with uneven floor boards is make sure all the boards are screwed down nicely and then cover with some hardboard which is normally 3.2mm thick then get your underlay advice from the cshop you are buying the flooring from
