How to correct using wrong type of paint
Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.43 PM
Hi,
I have mistakenly applied high gloss oil based paint to a bedroom wall, not realising (until washing roller and brushes) that it wasn't the emulsion I thought it was!
Stupid mistake caused by not checking label before using.
How do I rescue my wall? Fortunately it's only one wall, but the room strongly smells. Can I still put emulsion on when it finally dries please?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi there.... yes you can, however water based paints will not adhere to oil base paint without a good primer.
My advise would be... once the gloss has dried. rub down the surface with some sand paper making sure its nice and flat. Then apply two coats of zinsser bulls eye water based primer with a roller its one of the best. once dry apply your emulsion.
Regards
David

Hi
You already have one solution by David but you could also strip the gloss paint with a paint stripper. It wouldn't be very hard but need patience and you could get your wall back to original. Gloss paint is strip able as it make a layer.
