Gas basket in large opening

I have a large builders opening in my room, i would like to install a freestanding gas fire basket inside it but what is the largest size opening the fireplace can be, if its too large could i install a canopy above the fire or build a shelf to place the gas fire on so its closer to the flue? Thanks.
