Bathroom tiles not sealed
Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.19 PM
Hello - We just had new bathroom fitted. Noticed when water touch grout it change colour it turn darker. And also, some grout started to cracked. I don’t think the bathroom tiles/grout been sealed. I mentioned this to the bathroom fitter but he insisted that tiles/grout has been sealed. I don’t know how to prove that it’s not sealed. Anyhow, if my suspension is correct could I still get the bathroom sealed without removing anything in the bathroom? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi, you shouldn't need to seal the grout. Depending on the type of tile used, some do require sealing before fitting, then sealing once fitted and grouted. If the grout is cracking I think it could be a problem with the application. Its a tricky one without knowing the tiles and grout used.
Grout is porous so no matter what, it will change colour when it gets wet (usually a shade or two darker) but certainly shouldn’t crack when it dries. Grout cracking is usually down to the installation of the tiles and how they’ve been fixed as opposed to them needing to be sealed.
Generally speaking, natural stones need to be sealed and most tiles you can buy on the high street, along with a half decent grout shouldn’t require sealing at all.
You bathroom installer you should able to explain this to you and exactly what he has done. Just be mindful that whenever their is likely to be some movement (bath/shower) that tile to plastics should have been siliconed as opposed to grouted.
Hope this is of some help. 👍🏼
