Staircase base rail help

Hello,I am in the planning stage of replacing my staircase handrail and want to put spindles in place of the plywood boards that go up my stairs currently. My problem is that the wood where the base rail needs to sit on is only 25mm wide. Every base rail I've seen is around 60mm wide. Would I need additional width to place the base rail on?

hi pulpet
if you centre the base rail on the 25mm strip you have and pre drill it and screw it down. its what's pleasing to the eye and if you can live with it then secure it down
or screw a piece of timber the same width as the base rail first. its quite difficult without seeing it
