Installing New Bathroom Extract

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.18 PM

I am trying to install a new extract fan in my bathroom, specifically a vent axia VASF100T extract, so with timer. This is to replace an old Greenwood Airvac AX100B extract with pull cord. When installing the new extract, it is not starting, i am not sure if it is because the pull cord light switch is not linked to this and it needs a separate switch to start, or if it is another issue. Apologies I am relatively new to this, so this may be vague, however I am usually pretty resourceful and can solve most problem, but this one has me stumped. To provide some context the current set up is with black and red electrical wiring, the light switch is as mention a pull cord, the current old extract is wired in with only one red and black wires and there is a fuse socket right next to the extract. Any help with this would be appreciated. Also I've used the correct red/black to Blue/Brown connections and double checked.

The T in the part number refers to a 'timer/over-run', therefore it requires a live AND a switch-live. If there is only a three core cable currently you will need to link the L & SL within the extractor, although a lot of manufacturers prohibit this in the instructions. The unit will also NOT operate with an over-run with this setup. It must stress that this should be carried out by a competent person; only you are in the position to judge your competency. If in doubt, please engage a professional. Regards Ben

You require a 3 core + earth cable to it. Permanent live, switched live, & neutral. Via a fan isolation switch and fused down to 3amp via a spur unit outside of the bathroom. All work to be to BS7671. This is also work in a special location, so it needs notifying to Building Control. Think you need an electrician to be honest.

As mentioned in previous responses, you need a 1.5mm² 3 CORE AND EARTH CABLE for the fan to function correctly. You can possibly link the live wire with the switch but it will void your warranty and possibly damage the fan.
