Smells when running taps

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.18 PM

We are getting a methane/rotten egg smell from both the kitchen sink and bathroom sink when we run the water. There is also a smell from the outside drain these pipes drain into. We had a gas inspection and there was no gas coming from this underground drain. I have tried clearing the sink drains with bicarb, vinegar and boiling water but the smell keeps coming back. Any suggestions?

your household waste drainage system should have "U" bends in them shortly after the sink drain point. These U bends job is to act as an air seal to stop air from the drainage system coming in to your house through this pipework. I would check this first toi make sure you have them in place Easy enough to check and strip down to clean.

The smell of sewage is likely caused by bacteria in your drain producing gases that arise when the taps are turned on. I would suggest getting a company to pressure wash the drain.
