Do electrical sockets need to have switches?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.38 PM

We are looking to buy a house and have noticed that the sockets in the bedrooms look old and do not have switches. We will be letting the house out so is it illegal to keep these sockets? Many thanks.

Not ‘illegal’ no. But if they are unswitched and look a bit past it, you can bet your life the installation might be a bit old too, wiring, consumer unit etc. If you are going to rent it out have an EICR done on it. If the wiring checks out ok then change the sockets for switched.

No not illegal, but would recommend so easy to isolate. If you are going to be renting out, I would recommend that you have an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) carried out. This will highlight any areas that need addressing.
