Interior “multi-finish” plaster used outdoors

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.40 PM

After a leaky pipe from the flat above, my insurance company sent around a plasterer to redo the ceiling area that collapsed. The area is outdoors but is not exposed to rain because it forms part of a corridor that’s completely surrounded on the top and both sides by the apartment block. It is otherwise exposed to changes in temperature over the year. This is in Glasgow. The plasterer that the insurance company sent used indoor plaster on the ceiling. I had a plasterer/decorator around to quote on repainting my side of the wall that’s showing water damage and she said that cement should have been used because the indoor plaster will just crumble away due to the temperature changes and cause moisture to enter the building, so it should be redone properly, and has taken photos to send to British Gypsum. I don’t know who to believe! What are your thoughts? Thanks!

For this specific situation i would recommend an exterior gypsum soffit board. It is a board designed for use on the undersides of eaves, canopies, carports, and other commercial and residential exterior applications with indirect exposure to the weather. For finishing requirements the board surface can be left undecorated. The application of two coats of exterior quality paint after joint treatment will provide consistent appearance and enhanced durability.
