Preparing older walls for skirting

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.40 PM

I moved into my new house a few months ago and decided to replacement the laminate - wanting to do a proper job I decided to take off the skirting too. When I took off the skirting, the nails that were holding the old skirting in took out some plaster etc. and some of the plaster underneath was broken up anyway - unavoidable damage I relayed the new laminate (rookie mistake) before I sorted all the walls so now I've come to fit the new skirting there's quite a few areas where the plaster is say an inch or so behind wall level.. What would be my best bet in terms of sorting this? There's still a good amount of plaster left so I believe no-nails would do the job but the house is ~50 years old so I've no doubt I'll need to nail in some of the skirting because of bowed walls Would I be best using expanding foam, patching plaster or just leaving the gaps in the hope that the no-nails holds well enough? I've read all sorts online so I'm questioning every decision I make! Thanks

Best to fill the damage as long as it is flush with the original wall the no nails will be able to grip the whole length of the board giving a good bond

It would be better to fill in before fitting skirting boards,it shouldn't get messy if you put down floor protecter it comes in sticky rolls from most builders merchants and use carlite bonding plaster to fill in the area's where needed it's ideal for this kind of job, P.S make sure you pva the area's your filling.

Grip Fill is the best solution for this. Apply a generous amount and once dry it will not not go anywhere. If the span of the skirting is more than two meters and wall not straight you will need to try and get a fixing either with a raw plug and screws or nails to hold it in place but i would opt for screw option as you get a tight fix to the wall and fill and sand the holes after.
