Shower keeps going cold indefinitely

Anonymous user 4 March 2018 - 8.44 PM

I have new mixer shower that runs normally for a couple of weeks initially, and then runs completely cold until plumber is called out to "fix problem" again. It was installed about 4 months ago, was fine for a month, and since then has been on and off with this problem. The shower was always the first to go cold followed by the rest of the hot taps in the bathroom and then the kitchen. Since the plumbers last visit however, all the other taps are fine in the house but the shower has gone cold again and has been for the past 4 weeks. The bath tap runs hot and this is how we have a bath. The combi boiler is serviced regularly and has been ruled out on multiple occasions by British Gas. I am not sure where to turn now and wandering whether I need to install an electric shower as the problem just cannot be fixed by the plumbers who installed the new shower! Thanks for your advice

It sounds like you might have a problem with hot water bleeding through to the cold or vice versa through a mixer tap or shower, on the mixer there should be a one way valve fitted either in the shower unit itself or in the pipes going to the shower or mixer tap, on both the hot and cold entry to the shower/ mixer tap, if there is not one fitted water can travel from hot to cold inside the unit itself especially if you have unequal pressure between hot and cold. Also check that the hot water pipe is fitted to the left if it is a bar mixer. Hope that helps Geoff

have you done a flow test with just cold and then just hot then combined it maybe there isnt enough to feed the combi run only the shower on hot only first then take it through to cold if its cold on its own when it should be hot its likely to be the shower check if there is a pressure reducing valve under the boiler and if there is get bg to balance it with the cold hope this helps
