Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.35 PM
Hi all, i am planning having a workshop needing about 20 wall plug, each pulling around 1600w= 1.6kw each. I am converting my garage into the workshop and the electric network is asking my how much KVA i needed, how much do i need ? 1.6kw x 20 = 32kw ? = ?
Thank you
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hello Ian,
It isn't quite as easy as that. A few factors need to be addressed.
a) what is the supply rated at coming into your property?
b) Is it single or three phase?
c) Diversity which is required to equate the supply required?
d) KVA is apparrant power and not to be confused with amps as in load associated with eg a 10KW shower being switched on at a EMF 230v
e) Are you planning on a new supply ?
What I'm saying to you is you need it designing correctly with all options addressed. If it's a single phase incomer and you want to turn on all of your appliances at the same time you could have a potential problem.
What your business application is to alleviate overload.
I'm happy to take a look for you and design the job for you.

You will also need a licence if you want to grow hash at home :-)
Joking apart, as Tim alludes to above, such an installation really does need designing rather than 'stringing up' as I suspect that you perhaps don't really have an application that will draw 20 x 1.6KW and if you do then it will need some careful thought.
