Hi , im planning to convert my loft and I’ve had a look online at some plans of loft conversion just to make myself an idea about how to do it . Couldn’t some one explain me what s/w next to rafters or next to framing , battens , purlins means ?

Hi, If this is read on calculations, the term references the 'Self-Weight' of the particular element. When I have done loft conversions, I have not detailed the term s/w on my drawings.

Hello, I think you are referring to the architectural drawings which may have notes such as 50 x 200 treated s/w timber joists. This is an abbreviation for soft wood. I hope you find this useful. Best wishes Andrew
