How to clean fireplace bricks

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.37 PM

I have recently had the original fire place opened up and I would like to know what is the best way to clean the bricks that are heavily coated in soot? I have tried an acid solution bought from a DIY shop but it doesn't seem to be doing much.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Results will depend on porosity of bricks but firstly make sure you have brushed off all loose / dry deposits and hoovered up all debris. Then try an equal mix of vinegar + water sprayed onto bricks, leave for a few minutes then use scrubbing brush and wipe off. Follow up with a baking soda / water mix in same way to neutralise the acidity of the vinegar Regards David
