Want to know if we need planning or anything before we try and add a window to the side of our bungalow?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Good evening, No you do not usually need planning permission to add a new window or door, however you will need to establish if the wall you are installing the window into is load bearing or not, on load bearing walls you need to install an RSJ (Rolled steel joist) to support the existing structure and for this you will need to employ a surveyor or Structural Engineer to come and make sure that the work done is up to standards and safe. you can acquire the blueprints for your property to help with this or look at your joists to see which direction they travel in, for example look at the wall these joists meet at, this is your supporting wall and shouldn't be altered without supporting beams in place, the load coming down on that wall must be shifted to the sides of the wall this is where the RSJ comes into play. If you are installing the window onto a wall that is not load bearing then you can go ahead and install your window without any problems, but please be 1000% sure of this before commencing any work. im sure it depends on if you are overlooking into your neighbours property and if it is on the side elevation. you may be okay if there are already windows or doors in on the same elevation. sometimes it may come to asking the neighbour if they would mind you putting a window there.
