Chimney & Fireplace
Open flue with no cap on chimney
Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.34 PM
I have an open 'feature' fireplace that has an open flue, that if you look up, you can see all the way to the sky as there is no chimney pot or cap.
The previous owners stuffed pieces of wood up the flue but this left gaps so heavy rain trickled down, draughts, hailstones and during spring, even bees!
I had the wood removed and the whole chimney swept, but to stop all of the above happening again, I stuffed two old pillows into a black bin liner and stuffed it up the chimney. Knowing chimneys need ventilation, I didn't think it would be a problem as the flue is fully open to the elements at the top.
Is this okay to do?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi there,
I would recommend removing the pillows and installing a Chimney balloon, they aren't expensive. Also you will want to install a chimney cowl, either a colt top or high top, this will allow the chimney to breath, protects against weather but prevents debris or birds entering the chimney. Hope this helps.

You can block up the bottom and you can put a small vent there and on the top.you will need a capped pot to stop rain and birds nesting

Yes this is a problem and needs to be rectified. chimneys are now built with x2 lead trays with trickle vents. For years it was x1 lead tray.
This has changed in the last two years thanks to building control.
Most chimneys also have a bend.
The first tray is installed 150mm from the highest point of the roof. The tray is cut and dressed up inside the flue it is then dressed down the external masonry creating a water seal. this stops water coming down your chimney and also condensation. This prevents damp in your house. the bend in the flue stops the chimney howling and wind blowing down. RichardsonMarcer Builders ltd.
