Fluctuating electricity consumption

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.13 PM

I've installed an Owl electricity monitor to work out why our electricity bill has gone up by 181%. I notice that the usage fluctuates, and it's not consistent under similar scenarios Today I've turned off the fridge and the freezer but the consumption has been 4 times more than another day when no one has been home. What could be the cause for the increase

The only suggestion I can make is to start at the Consumer Unit to help narrow down the circuit. For example, you could switch off each MCB in turn until you find the 'offending' circuit. That will point you in the right direction. Turn the MCB back on and then systematically turn each item on that circuit off until you find the offending item. Some quick areas that are forgotten about but which cause consumption if left on but unnoticed: Loft lights Immersion Heater Outside shed/greenhouse heaters/lights It could also be indication of a wiring fault, e.g. water getting in an outside socket or deteriorating wire insulation - in which case, working out which circuit is affected will help the electrician find the problem. Good luck, hope you find it
