Attaching a cooker hood duct to a window

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.32 PM

We have an open kitchen in our apartment, and the cooker hood is currently just circulating the steam and causing quite a bit of damp. The hood is against an internal wall, and the vertical, metal, rectangular duct is currently just open-ended inside the room. There is a window further to the right (on perpendicular wall), through which I would like to expel the steam. Is there a way I can extend the existing vertical duct, with a 90 degree angle, through the window? Will it help to add an extractor fan in the window, and attach the duct to it? What tools/items do I need to buy for this? Thank you very much for your help.

If your hood is recirculating only ( some you can have extract or recirculating) I would consider getting an extract fan put in the wall if you can, vented to the outside. The ducting and the amount of bends will reduce suction on the hood. I would steer well clear of the window.

It will never look pretty venting out through the window. If you are desperate you can get a 4 inch hole cut in the glazing by a glazier if it's a single pane. Then you'll need a window extractor kit. 4 inch hose and an adaptor for the extractor and some jubilee clips or cable ties to lash it all together. It's never going to look good though!

Quite often kitchen fitters forget to fit the filters into non-vented extractor hoods. Always worth checking your filter before getting into extra expense of ducting. Even with a new filter you may decide your window vent idea is still required but it is an inexpensive first option to check out. If you decide you do need to vent your extractor: The best ducting to actually carry your steam etc to the window probably be PVC flexi-ducting but housed within a 3 sided metal casing/ducting that matches the duct on your extractor. Metal ducting with prefabricated bend could be sourced from an air-conditioning supplier. Sheet-metal cutter, rivets and rivet gun may be required - You can however also get flat, rectangular PVC ducting with prefabricated bends that may be easier to work with and suit your overall decor. Probably need circular adapters at each end to connect to the hood and window.
