Electrical

Training electricians

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 2.53 PM

I have found out after a few days that 2 out of 3 electricians doing the rewiring in my house are not fully qualified electricians. 2 are training: one is an apprentice in college and the other one a is an NVQ student. The 3rd one is qualified but still training to be able to deliver certificates. The boss came on the first day, since he only keeps in touch by phone. Is that normal? Also, I am concerned with safety as one day last week, the 3rd electrician was working all on his own, all day. Is that safe? Could you please advice me?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Doesn't sound very good to me. There are certain health and safety aspects that the contractor has to work to. Has he got public liability insurance? Personally I would ensure that a qualified person was on site all the time to make sure it was all being installed correctly. You say 3 Electricians? I would suggest you have not got any.

To add previous advice when you feel uncomfortable or worried about a situation get on the phone to the boss and express exactly how you feel about the situation... it is totally fine to have trainees doing some work but as mentioned already they need to be monitored by a qualified electrician. Don't hesitate to sort your situation out immeadiatly as your paying for it and have a full right to ask...... As Deacon mentioned you don't have a electrian if they are all in training... i'm sure it will work out but just call for some peace of mind Agnes............

You must have a fully qualified person present at all times to supervise the Trainees. Also, the Initial Verification ( Electrical Installation Certificate) requires that the standard of the work must be observed throughout construction and on completion by the qualified ( Competent Person ) or the certification is not valid.

Hiya, I would contact the boss of the company as said above and express your concern, We have apprentices that work with us but I would personally never send them out on their own until they have qualified - part of their training (if with JTL training provider) states they must be with a fully qualified person throughout. Allot of the time this would void a insurance policy if anything did happen. If the company are NIC EIC approved contractor or domestic contractor they must have a complaints procedure they must follow and if the customer is not happy at the outcome if can be raised to the main trade body. If I can be of anymore assistance please feel free to contact me.
