Remove floorboards before placing a subfloor?

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi, my tiler is suggesting we remove and ditch all bathroom floorboards and just screw a ply subfloor straight onto the joists before starting to tile... is this a normal approach? The floorboards are in great sound condition no damp patches..

Overboarding an existing wooden floor with ply is common practice, it creates rigidity and reduces movement greatly especially if 18mm ply is used. Its also the easier quicker option to the option your tiler proposes. The only reason i can think of re: removing the floorboards is that there may be a height issue, i.e adding 18mm to the current height? By removing the floorboards and then boarding with 18mm ply the height will stay the same ( as near as)

you can just lay a 12.5mm ply over your floor boards but make sure you screw it down so you get no movement then use a flexible adhesive and grout for the tiles should have no issues

Depends on the condition of the existing boards. if there in good condition ensure they are secured correctly and then use 6mm cement board such as 'no more ply' boards over the top. if they are falling apart then you could justify ripping up and replacing min 18mm ply.
