Plastering & Rendering

Repair or full skim required

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.31 PM

I've stripped wallpaper from a 1930's house and in one room patches of the plaster have fallen away. A dado rail has been taken down and also brought some plaster away. I would rather not have to have the full room skimmed, but would this be necessary or might patches of repair work be a possibility upon inspection? Thanks, Michael

Hi. I would suggest here, papering the walls with lining paper. Done well it can achieve an exellent wall surface for painting. Ideal if the walls have been previously papered and require some filling as you have stated. The results however will only be as good as the preperation. Any voids ( plaster missing etc) are better filled in stages, from deep fill to a light finish coat that feathers and blends to the rest of the wall. Sanded smooth and all residue from previous wallpaper removed and cleaned. A smooth finish to the wall and all voids filled is essential to papering with lining paper as it needs to be 100 % adhered. Size the walls and paper. I use ready mixed wallpaper adhesive and either a 1000 or 1200 grade lining paper.
