lacquered wooden kitchen worktop Problem

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.11 PM

So we had a kitchen fitted last week and are having a problem with the wooden worktop. It's hard to explain without pictures but I'll try. The worktop is oak and made of strips and it has been sprayed with laquer. Some of the strips have cracks are slightly cracked and uplifting in places and around the sink theyhave turnes slightly brown/black, i guess where water got in. As a possibly seperate issue, the laquer around the sink also looks like it's bubbling slightly and we just have no idea what to do. We've talked to the seller of our kitchen bit they just said to oil it. But I dont think this will be helpful since the worktop is laquered. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Agree with the above poster. A wooden Worktop should never be Lacquered. The wood moves to much and the lacquer will as you are finding fail. Personally I'd get back onto your supplier and get a new worktop as you will also need to seal the underneath side as well. You could use Danish oil, Boiled linseed oil or My preferred option Osmo wood protector oil to finish the worktop off

hi toco a real wood worktop should only be oiled with the suitable worktop oil not lacquer you will need to remove the sink and hob if this is also fitted into worktop and sand it back to remove the lacquer then a suitable sealer should be used on all cut edges then the sink and hob should be sealed with a suitable flexible gasket (should have been supplied if new appliances) then approx 2coats of worktop oil
