Paying a large deposit upfront?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.11 PM

HI I have had a quote from a local carpet fitter for my whole house carpetted for £1350 but he has asked for me to pay between £800-900 deposit to order the carpet in prior to the job. Is this normal? I am a little wary of handing over so much money to someone prior to them starting the job. Thanks Adele

I dont personally ask for an upfront deposit,i trust in my customers to pay once they have seen my quality of work and the job complete. Your house doesnt appear to be an expensive job, most fitters should be able to cover that cost. If he does insist on money upfront, make sure you get some details off him i.e public liability, phone number and address.Failing that,an invoice signed by you both. Hope thats of some help to you.

It is really upto the fitter what deposit he asks for. If he isn't making a lot on the job, then he is obviously covering his costs. Remember, he is probably as wary of you as you are of him. If he comes recommended with good reviews, and his price is cheap, maybe you should trust him, but obviously its your call

Hi adele i don't usually deal with carpets as i specialise in timber flooring , however i have had a few issues in the past where customers like yourself are concerned when it comes to handing over large amounts of money. you could ask your fitter to let you call his supplier and pay direct or you could source the carpets yourself however he may not want to do this as a general rule of thumb is most fitters put a small percentage ontop as they are sourcing the materials for you for example one room carpet was £10sqm to buy, but the fitter may charge £12sqm. hope this helps.
