Removing asbestos material

We have an expansion tank above our boiler, housed in a small cupboard built onto the wall. When we had the boiler replaced and no longer needed the tank our heating engineer started to remove it- but stopped and advised us to get it removed as he thought it was asbestos, rather than MDF or plywood as he had expected. We have taped up the small broken corner- some time ago now. I want to have this removed safely and am finding it difficult to get someone who seems appropriate to do this work. Who can do this properly and safely, what certification am I looking for and will it be very expensive?
