Replacing a bathroom extractor fan

Anonymous user 9 March 2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi all, our existing bathroom fan has suddenly become a lot louder and sounds on the verge of death. I'm not very handy and electric DIY doesn't seem the place to experiment! I don't know whether I should go online and try to buy some kind of replacement, then post a job here to have someone install, or post a job which asks for help purchasing. Can't tell much about the existing fan, it's NewLec brand and has an over-run of a few minutes, and doesn't look a million miles from this style: http://www.extractorfanworld.co.uk/st100t-silent-tornado-hi-power-bathroom-fan-with-timer-3435-p.asp It's a tiny bathroom, and I have no idea what's going on behind the wall in terms of wires or ducts. What's the best approach for this? I'm hoping this is a relatively quick fix that isn't going to break the bank, whether I buy something to be installed, or have a pro buy and install.

Hi, My advice would be to hire a professional, purely based on your statement: 'I'm not very handy and electric DIY doesn't seem the place to experiment!' You don't know what's behind that fan & really don't want to open a can of worms, or risk your own safety! Post the job & get at least 2 quotes. I would also advise on leaving the tradesman to acquire the fan, they will have the knowledge & resources to obtain the correct type for its location, this is what you're paying them for. Never tamper with anything you're not sure about. Hope this has helped.

Good afternoon, From what you are describing it could be the fan may be loose fixings, over dusted or the fan motor has worn out and needs replacing I am afraid. call a professional electrician to replace the fan. Hope this has helped you.
