Landscape gardener problem

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.10 PM

We've hired somone to do some flagging and turfing. Front, side and back of house. They started Monday by digging everything up. Asked for some money upfront so they could get the materials and the boss gave us a hand written reciept for what we'd given him plus wrote his home address on it and said he'd give us the supplies reciept when bought. They've had a couple of no shows this week and don't answer there phones or reply to messages. They did turn up Thursday and piled a huge amount of rubbish and rubble at our front which was meant to be shifted but is still there. Also they drove their digger over next doors driveway and have cracked some flags on it and have hit the dividing fence with the digger and damaged about since concerte slabs on the fence. Obviously I'm now getting grief from next door. Should I be worried these are fly by night Cowboys, what can I do if they don't turn up or respond to our calls. Also where do I stand regarding the damage to my neighbours property? Will I be liable for this? Many thanks.

obviously you went for a cheap job with cowboys always research your contractor and remember there is no such thing as a cheap job. Penny pinchers create cowboys pay proper money for proper work

Unfortunately I would have to agree with the comments you have already received. Cowboys exist in all trades and the lack of any paper trail or address from your contractor rings alarm bells immediately. I think all payment terms and conditions should have been stated after or during the quotation stage so you as the customer would know exactly how to proceed with these payments . Ideally through a staged process. Regarding the damage to your neighbours property, It isn't your responsibility and perhaps you should have asked if your contractor could prove they had full liability cover incase something much worse had happened. Your contractor should rectify these issues and hope the neighbours are tolerant with the inconvenience caused. Any respecting landscape company would not use others property for access without coming to an agreement with them before hand. And certainly not mentioning anything to yourselves or apologising and saying they would sort out these issues is not on ! Leaving you with the stress of uncertainty..... Not sure what you can do if they don't turn up on site, I would have thought you may have had a look at there website to know where they are based. However on a more positive note, It's a busy time of year and these guys could be inundated with work, And in there shame that they haven't committed 100% to yourselves are just avoiding contact because they have let you down ! I hope this story has a happy ending for you.

They should be no reason for money up front on a job like this I always allow the customer to pay for the goods as they arrive so they can see what they are paying for and give them the receipts if they like If u have quoted honestly u don't need to hide anything, but to have a no show after recieving money and not answering phone calls is very alarming any honest builders what not do this maybe best to stop the work anyway save yourself any more hardship from these guys best of luck
