Electrical

Garden extension

Anonymous user 28 February 2024 - 3.29 PM

I am renovating my garden and want to install a socket at the back. There is an outside light on the patio so I will ask an electrician to extend from that cable. However it is not ready for that work to happen but it does make sense to bury the cable now to the back of the garden (~25m). Can anyone recommend what cable I should bury so the electrician can come in later and do the job? Thanks, James. [Cheers for the responses below. Much appreciated]

You should not be running a cable for an outdoor socket from a lighting circuit. You will need to run a 2.5mm swa cable back to either your consumer unit or the nearest socket on your indoor ring main providing that the ring main is RCD protected. Also you will need a certificate from a part P approved electrician for this type of work. If the cable is run back to the consumer unit forming a new circuit it will also require notification to local building control from the installer. Be safe, Julian

Steel wire armoured cable (SWA) it will have to run back to a socket circuit or consumer unit as the lighting cable will not support a socket.
