can you plane down a door lining
Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.15 PM
Hi, ive just had a big disagreement with someone and need clarity on the right practice and if regulations allow for such.
Basically i want to know if you can i plane down the thickness of a standard internal door lining thickness of 27mm, 10mm off each side (making them 17mm) to suit a stud opening that was made too small for the kit, ie plane off 10mm from a 27mm thick lining.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
it is possible to plane the linings down, certainly not sanding them down as suggested above. I'd be more inclined to make the opening bigger if I'm honest. If it's a stud partition it's quite easy to do so and not massively time consuming. You can level a pencil line down, carefully cut along that, once plasterboard is out the way, knock the stud over and re-fix. I hope this makes sense 😊
you will be able to sand down the linings but it will make the lining less fire proof. as far as regulations go im unsure if it would pass

Hi there, yes easily done. You can run the frame through a table saw or take it to a timber shop who will be able to do this for you.
I have done this many times working on cellars to maximise door opening size and keep the door standard size.
