Is a plume diverter required?

Anonymous user 23 February 2024 - 3.09 PM

Hi Pros! We are currently looking at installing a open pergola (no roof, just beams) in our garden to the rear of the kitchen wall. This wall has no windows or doors just a solid brick wall. The plume diverter terminal will be around the same height the pergola main beam (60cm away approx on the horizontal). With this in mind will I need to get a diverter or as it's an open structure will I still be inline with building regs? What is minimum clearance in these circumstances as it's all a bit fuzzy. Thanks Jon

Interesting question, As always you should refer to the boiler manufacturer's Instructions and I would call technical to check the clearances are correct, it can be slightly different depending on the make of your boiler. The manufacturer's Instructions for the flue system show balconies and car ports but not a open pergola. It would not be a good Idea for the flue to be at the same height as the main beam (even if MI instructions allow). Best to go above if you can or run the plume kit under the beams to the end of the pergola.
