Bricklaying & Repointing

Water Repellant Seal on Blown Bricks and Mortar?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.27 PM

I had a bricky tell me not to use this stuff at all on any brickwork because whilst it repels water, it also stops it from escaping!? I understand this but surely if the brickwork is dry in the first place and everything internally (cavity wall) is dry then its not an issue? We can't afford to have our wall re-pointed and blown/decaying bricks replaced so I thought a coat or two of this might prolong and protect the brickwork. Thoughts from some brickies would be greatly appreciated.

Walls have to breathe so if they can't you get condensation. Condensation forms when the warm air hits the cold. This is generally a problem so I personally don't use them either. Why don't you try to repoint yourself. Start on a small area out of sight. Keep the mortar quite dry and puddingy. Then use a bit of cut off hose to place the mortar in. One of my first jobs as an apprentice was doing this in london. You soon pick it ip
