Standard units are used in areas where there is low risk of accident or injury occurring. If broken it will splinter into largish pieces and has the potential to cause deep wounds.
Toughened glass is designed to break into pea sized pieces on impact and therefore prevents deep lacerations if an accident should occur.
Laminated glass has a thin plastic film between two sheets of glass and is used mainly for extra security as it is a lot tougher to break. Most shop windows would be laminated.
There are strict regulations which reputable window companies will abide by. After discussing your requirements with them they will be able to advise you as to which type of glass you would need.
