Electrical

Light following leak

Anonymous user 15 March 2024 - 2.34 PM

We recently had some plumbing work done which ended up causing a leak through floorboards above some lights on the groundfloor. We are now finding that when we turn these lights on, after a while it will suddenly switch off and the fusebox will go down (for those lights only). Is this something we can leave for a while to 'dry out' or should we call somebody in? If so is it an electrician we need? All the lights are in the ceiling and I have no idea how a person would get to them.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the leak has been fully fixed lights should start working normally in a while, once the area is dry. If the RCD keeps tripping because of this still in 2-3 days time that means the leak still exists or might be the case of condensation creating in the ceiling void. For now you can take the spot lights off and ensure ventilation to the area, and constantly check if the ceiling is still wet. If cold water is running trough the waste pipe(I guess is a waste pipe ) and light bulbs are hot this will create condensation. I can suggest to insulate the pipework, especially if is close to the electric cables

I would advise you to turn the fuse/mcb off and get a registered electrician out to sort it as electricity and water do not work well together.

Yes, an electrician should have been called. As they normally deal with water tripping the circuit. I wouldn't do any worrying about how he is going to get them out as I take it they are recessed spots? They just pull out.
